Good Job team Ontario!!
Congrats Brian and Fred for representing Ontario really well. Sounds like it was again a Super tournament.
A big thanks to everyone who made the BC Crokinole Championship a success! And a special thanks to Clif Antypowich and his family. Clif is one of the heroes of the game. He's been tireless in promoting crokinole out West for years. But even his health problems recently haven't slowed him down from sharing his love of the game and making this year's tournament one of the best I've ever been to.
They've got several high quality players in BC now. Got to play against Quin, the defending champion. He's really skilled, very sharp in his 20s. Jordon Ripley (age 11?) won the rec singles, he's gonna be a really good player. And Joe's sister, Val Arnup, was great to meet. She did fantastic! But I doubted she was actually Joe's sister, never heard her shout - "come on Val!" And our own Fred Slater played well all day, helping us win the doubles and being very solid in singles play too.
As for the results, Fred and I fought our way to the singles final. We played on Clif's very original board (there's a pic somewhere here on the site). Took me a while to get used to it, Fred was on and clobbered me the first 3 rounds to take game 1. Fred took the 1st round of game two, then I finally one a round, then the next 2 to take game 2. I took the 1st 2 of the third game but Fred came back to tie it 4-4 and we went to a tiebreaking round with Fred having the hammer. I managed to win that round and take the prize.
Link to a few pictures and results from the great event.
Brian sent me a text saying that Fred gave him a really good match in the finals. I hope someone caught it on tape.
I'd also like to congratulate my sister, Valerie Arnup, who took home the recreational doubles title with partner Nicole St. Pierre and also was the runner-up for recreational singles in her first ever crokinole tournament!
I think if she'd had a little more confidence to enter in competitive she would have given Fred and Brian a run for their money. :)
