Actually I have seen some players flick the disc with their thumb rather than the index finger. holding the thumb behind the index finger, then flick the thumb sideways. Throws the opponent off, because they are actually shooting at a disc other than it first appears.

A friend of mine swore by this shot. He called it the 'hinge flick'. I've seen it used now and again and not heard anyone challenge it as not a legal shot as long as the only the finger moves and there's no pushing forward with the hand. You could probably use your thumb if you wanted but check the official rules, I think only fingers are mentioned there although I think that's meant to signify the digits on the hand (your feet have to be on the floor apparently ... and the cheek - well we all know about the cheek don't we ).
